The pestule is so heavy for my weakened hands! Its VERY good at crushing even small pills in one simple twist, or by rocking just a little bit.It does not scatter a pill one bit.Its truly excellent for spices like raw garlic and all else in the world of herbs and spices.I wanted a bigger bowl that I can empty out pill content easily, even with my finger to get most of the residue. The smaller bowls are hard to get at, we can't bend our fingers backwards to reach the steep lower sides of those smaller cups after all. (But I finally realized one could use a new, inexpensive-Walgreen's makeup brush for pill dust if u want to get it all out that way) But I doubt that others, except arthritics, will mind this elegant marble pestule and bowl. The base is nice and solid, hard to accidentally knock over, a plus!I finally realized my hands I do better holding the pestule upside down. For me, its easier to hold the big mushroom cap part, to get the same fine results. Maybe others with creaky wrists may prefer this route. At any rate it works so easily overall.This may be the prettiest light grey marble you will see outside Willians Sonoma..and anywhere even halfway near this price. (pretty stry-gations) Its a likeable little showpiece left out on your counter, just waiting for all the wonderful seasonings.

Some of the pros:-It's very solid.-It does its job well.-It looks nice enough to leave on my counter.-I was very happy with the price.-Surprisingly, we use it a lot more than I thought I would.Most people don't keep grinders or mortars and pestles in their home... but it can really give your food a *huge* boost in flavor if you have one and use it, especially for the few seconds of effort it takes to use it.Even if you're using something like fresh herbs in a sauce -- if you grind the fresh herbs very lightly and then put it in the sauce, and you're going to get a lot more of the flavor -- and a better flavor, that isn't going to otherwise come out from those herbs.There's all kinds of cool recipes you can take advantage of with one, too, if you want to get fancy... but that's totally optional.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE this grinder! It was exactly what I needed to pulverize my glucosamine tablets!Thanks to people who made reviews for this item depicting that it will grind pills! It really helped me pick this item!This will grind vitamin pills to powder!!! No need to use a pill splitter first. Just put the tablet in the dish and rotate the top part around a few times. It's AMAZING! Of course, you will need to put pressure when rotating the top part, but that is to be expected.I always worry that my supplements in tablet form will not properly dissolve once ingested. So on my glucosamine and chondroitan pills, I grind them and add to juice or water.

Works, looks good. I think using it well would require some mastery and restraint in portions, maybe a how-to video but I've yet to go that far.---------------------------------------------Updated 9 1 14I've grown to love this grinder - and boosted the star ranking accordingly - for both utility and aesthetics. It's like a little statue on your kitchen counter. It also powders anything you put in there - within limits. The trick is grinding in a rotating motion (like you were applying shaving cream in an old barber shop) instead of pounding. I imagine if you pound it you'd crack the marble pretty quick.

I have one of these mushroom grinders for things that require a powdered grind like mustard seed or finely crushed raw cacao beans and the like. It works great. Fits in the palm of my hand (it's small) and is easy and quick to smash something to bits. It's also steady on the countertop. I also have a traditional mortar and pestle for other types of spices and foods. The little mushroom pestle fits very snugly inside the base so don't expect to use it quite like you might a more traditional mortar and pestle.

Perfect for large spices that need to be crushed for certain flavor effects: coriander, cumin, coriander & mustard seeds. Also a good way to mix in just a little liquid or oil. Not too much as the pestle is a perfect fit with the mortar.I'd also use if for crushing tablets & pills except it's kind of big for the job. One tiny pill or pill chip doesn't warrant lifting a pretty hefty mortar. However, the unique marbling & fit make it a helpful and handy gizmo you'll not only use but will want to display. I'm very pleased!
